History Facts - The Construction of The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China was built to protect and uphold Chinese territories and empires from anyone that would attempt to take over. The Great Wall was constructed along various borders of Northern China by many dynasties.
Multiple stretches of border walls followed under different dynasties. Then the wall added garrison stations, watchtowers, and troop barracks for signaling capabilities. Aside from defense, the Great Wall of China also included controls for the transportation of goods, trading, and immigration.
With the help of advanced technologies, it was determined by studies that the walls already measured 8,850 kilometers during the Ming dynasty. According to an archaeological survey, the entire wall estimates 21,196 kilometers.
During earlier times, when bricks weren't yet in use, the walls were composed of stones, wood, and rammed earth. However, different materials emerged in the Ming dynasty, such as bricks, limestone, and tiles.
The stones used in the wall were cut into rectangular shapes. These were used as inner and outer brims, gateways, and foundations. Each wall contains a gap of at least 30cm for defensive purposes.
Today, some parts of the wall near tourist centers in Northern Beijing are being renovated. Other portions were purportedly demolished to make way for construction and mining. Some sections of the wall have vanished due to erosion from sandstorms.
